This is the closing post in the seven-part Logic and Reasoning field guide. It is the post the whole series has been building toward, and it is the one that most resists confident answers. The previous six parts described how reasoning works — as a single mind, as a society, in time, when healthy and when sick. This one asks the older, harder question: what is the difference between doing reasoning and understanding what the reasoning is about?
The question has bothered philosophers for a long time. Searle’s Chinese Room thought experiment (1980) is the cleanest version. A person who doesn’t speak Chinese sits in a room with a thick rulebook for manipulating Chinese symbols. Chinese-speakers pass questions through a slot; the person consults the rulebook and passes coherent answers back. From outside, the room appears to understand Chinese. From inside, the person doesn’t understand a word. The argument: syntactic manipulation of symbols is not sufficient for semantic understanding, no matter how sophisticated.
The argument is intuitive, the responses are substantial, and the matter is not settled. What modern LLMs have done is force the question to be rethought rather than answered. A system that produces fluent text on any topic, passes most knowledge tests, codes capably, and yet (apparently) doesn’t understand anything in the way a human does — this is exactly the Chinese Room with the rulebook taken to industrial scale. Whether the modern system fits Searle’s argument, falsifies it, or sidesteps it entirely is one of the genuinely open intellectual questions of our era.

The understanding question. Why “they get the right answer” is not the same as “they understood the question.” The distinction between behaviour and comprehension. Why this matters operationally (not just philosophically) for how we deploy reasoning systems.
Searle’s Chinese Room, in detail. The thought experiment, the argument it’s meant to make, the formal claim. The handful of responses (the systems reply, the robot reply, the brain simulator reply, the combination reply, the other-minds reply). Where each one bites and where each one falls short.
Grounding. What it would mean for a symbol to be grounded — connected to a non-symbolic referent. Harnad’s argument. The empirical literature on multi-modal grounding. Why this is the most concrete handle on the understanding question.
Modern LLMs through the Searle lens. The argument that LLMs are exactly the Chinese Room at scale. The counterargument that they aren’t (vector representations are not symbols in the right sense, the connection to the training data does something different from rule-following). The honest version of the debate, with the strongest versions of both sides.
Comprehension as a capacity. What it would take to measure understanding rather than performance. The proposals (counterfactual reasoning tests, generalization-to-truly-new tests, the “explain to a child” test). Where the measurement literature is and where it isn’t yet.
The closing reflection. What the seven parts taken together have built up to. The implications for engineering practice. The questions left open.
