This is the first post in a seven-part field guide on logic and reasoning. The series builds an arc: from the foundations of how a single mind reasons, through the computational limits of formal reasoning, into multi-agent problem-solving, the dynamics and health of communities of reasoners, and finally to comprehension — what it means to genuinely understand something rather than only manipulate its symbols. The series is plain-language throughout, with interactive figures and worked examples, and it is designed to be read in order.
Part I is the foundation. Before any of the later parts will land, the vocabulary has to be settled — what logic actually means (a study of form), what reasoning actually means (the move from premises to conclusion), the half-dozen distinct kinds of reasoning humans do (deduction, induction, abduction, causal, analogical, inference to the best explanation), the classical fallacies, and what makes one argument stronger than another. The natural companion is the RCA series, where abductive reasoning is the central engineering practice, and the Generalization & Transfer field guide, where inductive reasoning is the structural problem.
What it covers
Nine sections, about twenty-four minutes of careful reading.
§ 01–02 — What logic is, what reasoning is. The two terms are usually conflated. Logic is the study of form (what makes a conclusion follow). Reasoning is the act of moving from premises to conclusion. The distinction matters.
§ 03 — The types of reasoning. Six major kinds. Deductive (the conclusion is locked into the premises). Inductive (generalising from cases to a pattern). Abductive (inference to the best explanation). Causal. Analogical. Best-explanation. Each one is the right reach in a different setting.
§ 04 — One scene, three inferences. A single observation read three different ways by three different reasoning modes. The contrast that makes the categories real.
§ 05–06 — Reasoning about cause; other modes. The hard problem of causal inference. Why correlation doesn’t suffice and what it takes to confirm causation. The other modes (counterfactual, modal, default).
§ 07 — How humans actually reason. The empirical observations from cognitive psychology. The two-systems framing. The systematic biases. Where the textbook account departs from the laboratory account.
§ 08 — When reasoning breaks: fallacies. The classical catalog. Ad hominem, appeal to authority, the formal fallacies (affirming the consequent, denying the antecedent), the statistical fallacies (base-rate neglect, conjunction fallacy). The vocabulary that lets you call out a broken argument.
§ 09 — Building and judging arguments. The constructive side. Premises, inference rules, conclusion. The discipline that distinguishes a persuasive argument from a sound one.
